How to Start Hosting

You Can Host!

You don’t need a perfect home, a big group, or a detailed plan to start hosting.
You just need a reason to invite people over.
This step-by-step guide will show you how to keep it simple, low-stress,
and actually fun, so you can start hosting sooner!

Does this sound familiar?

Hosting doesn’t have to mean a full dinner party for 10.

  • 1–3 friends
  • A casual plan (wine + snacks, coffee + dessert)
  • A short timeframe (2–3 hours max)

Smaller gatherings remove pressure and let you focus on the experience, not perfection.

Step 2: Pick a Simple Plan

You don’t need a full theme to host a gathering.
Choose a format instead:

  • Wine & Catch-Up
  • Girls Dinner
  • Takeout Night In
  • Sunday Snacks & Spritz

It gives your hangout structure without adding pressure to decorate or
over-plan.

discover your potential

Step 3: Build a Low Stress Menu

Keep it easy, repeatable & mostly prepped ahead.

  • 1 main (or shared item)
  • 2–3 snacks/sides
  • 1 “fun” item (dessert or elevated touch)

Beginner hosting rule: If it requires last-minute stress, skip it!

Step 4: Set the Scene

Make your space feel presentable. But don’t stress over cleaning where guests won’t be. Your space doesn’t need to be pristine, just welcoming. Focus on:

  • Clearing surfaces (instant reset)
  • Soft lighting (lamps > overhead)
  • Set the vibe (flowers, candles, or styled table)

Easy Upgrades: cloth napkins or paper styled nicely; a simple tray for drinks; music already playing before guests arrive.

Step 5: Prep Before Guests Arrive

The goal is to not be rushing around once the doorbell arrives. A prepared host is a calm host. Do these things ahead of time:

  • Chop, plate, or pre-assemble food
  • Set out glasses + serving items
  • Open wine / chill drinks
  • Clean your sink + entryway (high-impact zones)

Pro tip: Light a candle 5 minutes before guests arrive.

Step 6: Welcome Your Guests

You’ve prepped, you’re set up, everything is ready to go! Now is the time to welcome your guests and enjoy your company.

  • Greet them warmly, take their coat, do anything that can help them settle into your space
  • Offer them a drink
  • Let the night unfold!

You don’t need to apologize for your home, have everything perfect or even “host” or entertain the entire night.

Your guests will remember how it felt, not how it looked or didn’t look.

Step 7: How to End the Night

Ending the night can be the most difficult part. You don’t want to be rude, but sometimes guests can linger longer than you want. Here are some tips to help wrap up the party:

  • “Okay wait, one last drink before we all head out”
  • Start tidying lightly. This can signal the shift that the party is done.
  • Mention the next time you’ll host to switch the conversation to “let’s do this again”
  • Or, be straight up. Mention that you have an early morning or are feeling so tired that it’s time for bed.

The mindset shift that
changes everything!

You’re not hosting to impress people.
You’re hosting to create a space where people feel good.
You’re hosting to connect and build friendship with people.

If only the process of getting to the fun parts of If only the process of getting to the fun parts of a party set up wasn’t cleaning a whole backyard…

My dad’s backyard doesn’t get a ton of use through the summer so it means there’s some work to do.

I try to get the cleaning done early and as fast as possible so I can focus on the best part of parts of planning a party!

Brick is cool and all, but sometimes you just want Brick is cool and all, but sometimes you just want to cover it up, ya know?

The adhesive on tinsel backdrops is never that great. So it for sure would not hold up to being stuck to a dirty brick wall.

But just like how we stick it to painters tape to not ruin our walls, it will stick to duck tape!

And here’s how you do it:

1. The brick needs to be a smooth brick
2. Get some quality, blue duck tape
3. Place the duck tape on the brick where you plan to hang items.
4. Stick your garland to the duck tape. The garland should cover the blue tape.

Voila! You have a sparkly wall! ✨
