How to plan
Host a Dinner Party
There’s a reason dinner parties never go out of style.
They turn an ordinary night into something people actually remember. Where conversations flow, laughter lingers, and time somehow
slows down around the table.
Step 1: Decide the Vibe
Before you think about food or decor, decide how you want the night to feel. Ask yourself:
- Is this casual or elevated?
- Sit-down dinner or more relaxed, family-style?
- Weeknight easy or weekend event?
Your vibe will guide every decision, from your menu to your table setting.
Examples:
- Cozy & casual: pasta night, candles, shared plates
- Elevated but easy: roast chicken, simple florals, wine
- Fun & themed: taco night, Italian dinner, “bring a bottle”

Step 2: Finalize Your Guest List
Keep it manageable. Especially if you’re new to hosting.
6–8 guests = great for a slightly more energetic table
4–6 guests = ideal for a relaxed, intimate dinner
Think about:
- Seating space
- Table size
- Flow of conversation
A smaller group almost always feels more comfortable (for you and your guests).
Step 3: Plan a Simple, Thoughtful Menu
Plan your menu around these items:
- 1 main
- 1–2 sides
- Something simple for dessert
Choose dishes that:
- Can be prepped ahead
- Don’t require you to be stuck in the kitchen
- You’ve made before (or are very low risk)
Example menu:
- Main: roasted chicken or pasta
- Side: salad + roasted vegetables or potatoes
- Dessert: store-bought cake, ice cream, or cookies

Step 4: Prep Ahead
Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Phasellus ultricies ultricies nulla, convallis maximus lacus imperdiet sed. Etiam gravida arcu eget sed. Aenean nulla arcu, tristique sit amet facilisis eget, tempus quis ante.
Step 5: Set the Table
This goes hand in hand with prepping ahead. Set your table based on your style or if you have a theme in mind for your dinner. Here are some key elements you’ll need as a starting point:

Step 6: Create the Atmosphere
Outside of the food, the atmosphere of your dinner party is key!
And honestly, the simplest thing to create!
Step 7: Have Something Ready When Guests Arrive
Be ready to welcome your guests when they arrive. Take their coats and offer them a beverage. This sets the tone immediately.
This gives people something to do right away and helps everyone settle in.

Step 8: Keep the Flow Simple
If you’re planned and prepped, keep the flow natural and calm.
Sit down. Eat. Pour yourself a drink.
Be part of the conversation.
This is the most important step—and the one people forget.
The best hosts aren’t the ones who do the most—they’re the ones who make people feel the most comfortable.
