How to host a Board Party with your friends

The first themed dinner I ever attended was a Board Party, and let me tell you—it sold me on the idea of hosting these kinds of gatherings as often as possible. The concept was simple but so versatile: everyone brings a themed “board” of food to share. With endless possibilities and Pinterest inspiration galore, I was hooked.

Want to learn more about how we organize our theme parties, I’ve spilled it all here!

For my board, I went with a Mexican-inspired theme. Because, honestly, who doesn’t love guacamole, queso, and tacos?

Building My Mexican Board

Here’s what I included:

  • Mini Cheese Quesadillas: Warm, melty, and a crowd-pleaser.
  • Tortilla Chips & Sliced Peppers: Perfect for dipping in salsa, guac, and queso.
  • Watermelon Spears with Tajín: A fresh and zesty touch.
  • Siete Churro-Flavored Chips: A sweet twist to balance the savory options.

To keep things creative and on-theme, I used a galvanized tray I had on hand, along with a few extras from my party stash. From mini plastic cactuses to small terracotta planter trays (used for watermelon slices, Tajín, and lime wedges), I brought the Mexican vibes to life. My favorite addition? A thrifted tortilla warmer for the quesadillas—it was both functional and adorable.

How I Pulled It Together

This was a super easy board to prep and transport:

  1. Cook Ahead: I made the quesadillas right before leaving and kept them warm in the tortilla warmer.
  2. Pre-Cut Everything: Veggies and watermelon were prepped ahead of time.
  3. Pack Thoughtfully: I brought all the bowls, trays, and utensils I’d need for presentation. Pro tip: don’t rely on the host to have extras—they’re already juggling hosting duties!

Once at my friend’s house, everything came together quickly. We set up the boards on the kitchen island and dining table, making it easy for everyone to grab bites or fill a plate and sit wherever they wanted.

The Other Boards of the Night

The creativity my friends brought to the table was next-level:

  1. Pub Apps Board: Chicken skewers, mozzarella sticks with marinara, potato skins, garlic bread, and spinach dip—basically, bar food heaven.
  2. Pizza & Dip Board: Two types of pizza cut into squares, paired with a variety of dipping sauces. Simple, yet so satisfying.
  3. Clue Fondue Board: The most creative board of the night! Using a thrifted Clue game board, our friends epoxied it to create a sturdy serving surface. Each dipping element was named after a Clue character, like Mrs. Scarlet Tomatoes and Mrs. Popcorn Chicken Peacock. Genius!
  4. Dessert Board: A sugar lover’s dream with fruits, pretzels, mini donuts, brownies, cookies, cinnamon rolls, and so much more.

We were all stuffed by the end of the night—the food was incredible, though admittedly heavy. (Next time, we’ll need to include a veggie board for balance!)

Why I Loved This Party Theme

The best part about a board party is its flexibility. It’s perfect for smaller spaces where a sit-down meal isn’t feasible. Boards are easy to transport, simple to set up, and allow everyone to contribute in a creative way. Plus, it turns the kitchen island into a fun centerpiece for mingling.
